Manhattan Theatre Club

Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC) has called New York City Center its off-Broadway home since 1984 when they created the 300-seat Stage I and 150-seat Stage II. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and Executive Director Chris Jennings, MTC is a preeminent not-for-profit theatre that produces seasons of new plays and musicals at City Center and at their Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on Broadway. In just over five decades, MTC’s over 600 premieres have been recognized with 30 Tony Awards, 51 Drama Desk Awards, and seven Pulitzer Prizes amongst many other accolades.

Machinal

Inspired by the infamous 1926 case of Ruth Snyder, a woman sent to the electric chair for murdering her husband, Machinal follows this woman’s rebellion against a world of crushing conformity—where passion, desperation, and defiance collide in a shocking act of violence. Nearly a century after its debut, this play remains a strikingly relevant meditation on gender, power, and the oppression of “the machine.”

Dakar 2000

In Senegal on the eve of Y2K, an idealistic Peace Corps volunteer survives a mysterious car accident. An imposing State Department operative arrives at his hospital where she immediately takes command of the situation and his safety. Though they couldn’t be more different, they form an unlikely relationship. But when it becomes clear that they both have secrets, the volunteer is roped into a darker side of public service—one he can’t come back from. Unpredictable at every turn, this world-premiere thriller was commissioned by Manhattan Theatre Club. Dakar 2000 is written by Rajiv Joseph (Pulitzer Prize finalist for Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo; King James at MTC) and directed by May Adrales (Vietgone and Poor Yella Rednecks at MTC).
