Encores! High Spirits
Activity: The Summoning Circle
A summoning circle is a ritual used in magic and fantasy to call forth spirits and to protect the person calling forth the entity. This is often a circular boundary drawn on the ground.
In some traditions, summoning a spirit means using symbolic objects to represent a person and focusing energy on calling them into a space. Different objects may stand in for various parts of a person, their physical presence, or personality.
Think of saying “Beetlejuice” three times or using an Ouija board in a movie. In High Spirits, Madame Arcati’s séance plays with these ideas for comic effect.
If you were to decide on five objects that could be used to summon your spirit, or the spirit of one of your friends or family members, what would they be? Use the circle below to place one item on each section that is deeply meaningful to you or the person you choose.
These items might include:
- An object connected to a powerful memory
- Something that represents things you love
- A sound, smell, or song
- A place or symbol that feels essential to who you are
